I-485 Adjustment of Status Attorney

The I-485 application is the process through which individuals already in the United States can apply for a green card (lawful permanent residence) without having to return to their home country. This form is most commonly filed after an approved immigrant petition, such as Form I-130 (family-based) or Form I-140 (employment-based).

Requirements for Filing Form I-485

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Have a valid basis for immigration (family, employment, asylum, or other approved petition).
  • Be physically present in the United States.
  • Be admissible under U.S. immigration law (no disqualifying grounds such as certain criminal or immigration violations).
  • Submit a properly completed Form I-485 along with required fees and supporting documentation.

Suggested Supporting Documents

When filing an I-485 application, applicants should generally include:

  • Approved immigrant petition (I-130, I-140, or other).
  • Birth certificate and passport biographic page.
  • Form I-94 or other proof of lawful entry into the U.S.
  • Medical examination report (Form I-693) completed by a USCIS-authorized physician.
  • Two passport-style photos.
  • Evidence of financial support (Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, if required).
  • Marriage certificate (for family-based cases) or other relationship evidence.

The I-485 process can feel overwhelming due to its detailed forms, extensive documentation, and strict eligibility rules. We guide clients through each step – from confirming eligibility to assembling strong supporting evidence and preparing for the USCIS interview – so you can approach your green card application with confidence.
